Yesterday Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), after a 37-point loss in her GOP primary on Tuesday, publicly stated her ideas for a 2024 Presidential Run.
Cheney is known for being backed by Nancy Pelosi to investigate President Donald Trump's role in the January 6 "attack" on the US Capitol. This move was questioned not only by fellow Republican Representatives by also by her constituents.
Ferna Thatcher from Wyoming stated in the Wall Street Journal Podcast in July:
" She wants just to be in the limelight. And I don't think she cares about really what the people want, that she's just wanting to be on TV and be loud." to which reporter Natalie Andrews responds: " Ms. Thatcher really is reflecting the trouble Liz Cheney is facing in Wyoming. Liz Cheney is courting Democratic voters in ruby Republican Wyoming, hoping that maybe some of those voters can register Republican, which Wyoming voter laws allow them to do, and maybe boost her in the primary where she doesn't have overwhelming support from Republicans."
In May 2021 Cheney was ousted out of the third highest-ranking House GOP as head of the House Republican conference due to her vote to impeach Trump on charges relating to January 6.
Today, Liz Cheney's steadfast anti-Trump position is consistent despite her defeat.
After this week's election results, Cheney stated on NBC her thoughts about a 2024 Presidential run,
“It is something I’m thinking about, and I’ll make a decision in the coming months,” Cheney said, emphasizing that she’ll be “doing whatever it takes to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office.”
According to the Constitution, there are only 3 qualifications to run for President. One must be 35 years of age, a natural-born citizen, and must have lived in the United States for at least 14 years.
Career politicians losing an election does not disqualify the public or defeated Congressmen from running in a Presidential race.
Her argument for doing so: Abraham Lincoln.
“The great and original champion of our party, Abraham Lincoln, was defeated in elections for the Senate and the House before he won the most important election of all,” Cheney said. “Lincoln ultimately prevailed. He saved our Union, and he defined our obligation as Americans for all of history.”
Will this Lincoln mindset help Republicans change their tune for their support for Trump in 2024 and the injustices they feel towards Jan 6? Or does Kamala Harris dropping out of the Presidential primaries in 2020 and being the Vice President pick inspire and/or motivate Cheney to run in 2024?
